Tom Sachs’ first collaboration with Nike holds a well deserved place in the sneaker halls of fame. Both versions of the Mars Yard were an instant classic (we’re not even going to talk about that overshoe), the minimalist approach to colour and use of exquisite materials made sure they would stay at the top of every sneaker head’s grail list and still sell for upwards of $5,000 even today.
Holding true to his laid-back, made-to-wear approach to sneaker design, Tom Sachs’ latest partnership with Nike presents the “General Purpose Shoe”. Seen in white and yellow, the sneaker holds features that are reminiscent of a few household Nike models; the Sb Janoski, Waffle 1s and Killshot are silhouettes that spring to mind when looking at possible inspiration behind the shoe.
We were recently treated to an exclusive look at the yellow version, which is plain and simple, yet still fulfilling as a “general purpose shoe”. Suede foxing and mudguards encircle the shoe, with tough-looking canvas on the side panels and an almost commando-type sole, the shoe looks like it could be really put through the ringer, something that Mr Sachs himself encourages with every release.
You’ll be hard pressed to find anything that can hold a candle to the originality of the Mars Yard, however anything Tom Sachs attaches his name to usually finds favour amongst sneaker collectors. When the General Purpose Shoe releases later this year, it will likely be no different.
