Big Rock Candy Mountaineering has just released its debut collection and much like the 1920’s ‘hobo country anthem’ of the same name, the brand aims to capture the spirit of a gleeful America, harking back to the country’s outdoor mascots that ruled the trails with nothing but all-weather parkas, natural fibres and determination packed into their canvas sacks.

Founded by Rowing Blazers & Wythe alumni Samuel Hardeman and Peter Middleton, Big Rock Candy Mountaineering is an ode to the American outdoor aesthetic of old, transported to the 21st century at just the right time, as the inevitable gorp fatigue begins to set in.

BRCM’s debut collection focuses on two key outerwear styles, alongside essential trousers, vibrant headgear and accessories, with the graphic tees and sweats acting as the contemporary garnish to an otherwise retro-rooted offering.

Directly inspired by Eddie Bauer’s iconic Karakoram model, BRCM’s Arctic Parka comes with all the trappings of a true-to-form “big jacket” - perfect for the winter months with its faithful nylon outer shell and duck down-filled baffles.

In addition to a total of three drawstrings for ultimate ‘cinchability’, the parka is finished with ribbed cuffs and custom buttons decorated with an ice pick motif, once again paying respects to the pioneers of hiking culture.

The second outerwear option, dubbed the Alpine Jacket, is more attuned to modern sensibilities, acting as what is essentially a synthetic-filled down hoodie, although still keeping in line with the vintage inspiration thanks to the hidden ribbed collar and front sweep pockets.

Aside from the core selection of hard-wearing canvas climbing trousers, Big Rock Candy Mountaineering has also lined up a series of kitschy graphic styles, including the Wayne tees and sweatshirts that display a cartoonish rendition of the brand’s friend and mascot.

Final splashes of colour can be found on simple snapback caps, where the BRCM vanity plate is proudly displayed, also featuring on the Gator backpacks that boast genuine suede panelling, alongside cowhide straps placed on the front, opening up even more storage possibilities.
