Following consecutive collaborations of the global persuasion, where Palace has facilitated link-ups with Japan’s Neighbourhood and Finnish rock band HIM, the London skate firm is back on English soil this week, revealing a debut project with Fred Perry nestled amongst more mainline bits from its Autumn 25 collection.
While there’s no shame in sewing its skate oats with cross-continental works that expand the reach of Palace’s irreverent approach to streetwear, it is projects like these that remind us of the firm’s roots as a symbol of nonconformity for today’s youth — a cross which tennis brand-turned cultural icon Fred Perry is more than familiar with bearing.
When the eponymous label was first introduced by British tennis champion Fred Perry in the early 1950s, it presented the public with a first-of-its-kind, celebrity-endorsed range of affordable sportswear that quickly became adopted as a staple of casual dressing in post-war Britain.
Societal changes across class, style, and self-expression were rampant in the following years, creating the perfect environment for a purpose-built sporting staple to be co-opted across all corners of counterculture, first finding refuge with the Mods of the 1960s before spreading to branching movements, including Northern Soul, Casual Culture, Punks, and now, the world of skating.
Palace pays homage to the perennial nature of the Fred Perry polo shirt by simply adding its name below the former’s legendary Laurel Wreath logo, implemented on three colours of the tipped, short-sleeve version, two knitted longsleeves, an Argyle Cardigan, and tracksuits comprised of bomber-collared jackets and pin-tucked track pants.
Running in stark contrast to its Fred Perry collaboration, Palace’s in-house offering for Week 6 of its Autumn 25 collection showcases a colourful approach to technical jackets, graphic hoodies, caps, and knits.
Bold branding takes centre stage on seasonal colours of Palace’s “Basically A” 6-panel caps and the Arch Funnel Knits, whereas Palace’s penchant for striking combinations of colour and graphic work gets a nod on the range of Dragon Bones Tri Hoods, which come in green, “Skyline Blue”, “Purp”, navy, grey, and black — each displaying Tri-Ferg logos intertwined with skeletal dragon figures.
The drop also welcomes another input of techy Palace outerwear, materialised here across colour-blocked, insulated styles built from high-performance Pertex Quantum fabric, available in a mix of purple, black, and pink, alongside green-based and blacked-out iterations that all feature laser-cut Tri-Fergs across the rear.
Palace’s sixth release of the Autumn 25 season, including its collaboration with Fred Perry, drops this Friday, September 12, via the brand’s website and physical stores at 11:00 am local time.
A release in Asia follows on Saturday, September 13.
